A step-by-step walkthrough of a fiberglass deck installation — how long each stage takes, what the site looks like, and what we need from you.

Most people have never had a fiberglass deck installed and have no reference point for what the week looks like. Here is an honest walkthrough, including the parts that are inconvenient.

Day one: assessment and demolition. We sound the existing deck for delamination, check moisture levels, and confirm what we found at the estimate still holds. Then the old surface comes off. This is the loud, dusty stage. If we uncover rotted sheathing or framing that was not visible before, this is when we will tell you — and we will show you rather than just describe it.

Day one to two: substrate preparation. Damaged material is replaced, fasteners are set below the surface, and slope is corrected so water runs to the drains. This stage is unglamorous and it is where a good installation is actually won. A laminate is only as flat, as sound, and as well-drained as what it is bonded to.

Day two to three: lamination. Mat and catalysed resin go down in measured passes and get rolled out void-free, then carried up every vertical termination — walls, posts, thresholds, scuppers. There is a distinct styrene smell during this stage. It is strong, it dissipates within a day or two, and if anyone in the house is sensitive to it, tell us before we start so we can plan ventilation and timing around it.

Day three to four: top coat and non-skid. The pigmented top coat is applied in your chosen colour, with non-skid aggregate broadcast into it wherever you need traction. This is the point where the deck stops looking like a construction site and starts looking like the finished product.

Cure and handover. The system needs to cure before it takes traffic — typically 24 to 48 hours depending on temperature and humidity, and Florida humidity does affect this. We will give you a specific window rather than a vague one. Then we clean the site, walk the finished deck with you, and go through how to look after it.

What we need from you: clear access to the deck and to water and power, furniture and planters moved off beforehand (or tell us and we will handle it), and a heads-up on pets, allergies, and any schedule constraints. Most residential decks run three to five working days. Weather moves that — we would rather wait a day than laminate into a storm.
